{"id":12628,"date":"2025-07-04T14:57:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-04T12:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/danubagarden.hu\/?p=12628"},"modified":"2025-07-04T14:57:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T12:57:15","slug":"biodiversity-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danubagarden.hu\/en\/biodiverzitas-kert\/","title":{"rendered":"Biodiversity in the home garden - balance, beauty and health naturally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When designing a cottage garden - be it an ornamental garden or a vegetable garden - we often think about aesthetics, yield or ease of maintenance.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>But there is a less spectacular but more important factor,<\/strong> that determines the long-term health of our gardens: biodiversity, the variety of living things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:68px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-zold-vedelem-fak-mint-a-mikroklima-orei\">Green protection: trees as guardians of the microclimate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Trees not only provide shade, they literally save life in the garden - especially during the hot summer months.<\/strong>\u00a0Under their canopy, a cooler microclimate is created, which is not only more pleasant for us, but also for the soil, plants and micro-organisms. Their roots help to retain soil moisture and their foliage enriches the soil with organic matter - if not raked up. In contrast, a garden with many different species and varieties is harder for pests because they are distracted by the cavalcade of scents, colours and shapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-tarsnovenyes-termesztes-remek-peldaja-ennek\">Co-planting is a great example of this:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Carrots + onions: repel each other's pests (carrot fly, onion fly).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Basil + tomatoes: basil improves the taste of tomatoes and repels aphids.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Celeriac + brassica: the aroma of celeriac confuses the brassica.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Velvet blossom: its roots release a substance that keeps nematodes away - fifty shades of green (and other colours)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Biodiversity is not only a conservation strategy, but also an aesthetic experience.<\/strong>\u00a0The variety of leaf shapes, flower colours and growth forms brings a natural rhythm to the garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nehany-a-szep-es-hasznos-disznovenyekre-akar-a-vetemenyesben-is\">Some of the most beautiful and useful ornamental plants even in the vegetable garden:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lavender - fragrant, attracts pollinators, repels moths.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Verbena, coneflowers, marigolds, ornamental onions - with their flowers of different sizes and colours, they enliven the garden while helping to create an insect-friendly environment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yarrow - the protector of soil-dwelling beneficial organisms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mulching - i.e. <a href=\"https:\/\/danubagarden.hu\/en\/product\/10-novena-mulch-mix-with-mycorrhiza\/\">soil cover <\/a>organic matter such as grass clippings, bark, straw or mulch - also contributes to biodiversity conservation.<\/strong>\u00a0The mulch:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reduces evaporation (summer irrigation is not covered in this <a href=\"https:\/\/danubagarden.hu\/en\/blog\/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-summer-ontosis\/\">we wrote in our blog post<\/a>),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cools the soil,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>inhibits weed infestation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and, as it decomposes, provides nutrients to the soil (<a href=\"https:\/\/danubagarden.hu\/en\/blog\/the-secret-eros-of-soil-humus-1x1\/\">humus 1\u00d71 blog post<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It also provides a habitat for soil-dwelling insects and beneficial micro-organisms - strengthening the natural balance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:61px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-zold-oazis-tudatossaggal\">Green oasis with awareness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Biodiversity is not just an abstract concept, it gives our garden a naturalness, because one of the basic laws of nature is that it strives for maximum entropy (diversity) -
