What happened to my plant? - Symptoms of nutrient deficiency in plants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So by the middle of summer, it is often the case that our vegetable plants or ornamental plants or fruit in the garden don't look like the big book says they should. The Liebig minimum principle - a basic law of plant breeding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I'm sure many of us have come across the name Justus von Liebig in the course of our studies, yet we don't think much about him in our everyday lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a chemist, Liebig worked a lot on the uptake of nutrients by plants. He is credited with the Liebig minimum law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liebig recognised as early as the second half of the 1800s that plant growth is always limited by the factor that is present in the least amount. <\/strong>In other words, plants can only make optimal use of the nutrients and energy they take in from their environment if they are available in the right proportions. This means that if, for example, a large amount of phosphorus is supplied to a crop, but other nutrients are in short supply, the plants they cannot use it effectively <\/strong>phosphorus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
