Chitosan - natural protection for plants

Chitosan is a naturally occurring, biodegradable substance found mainly in the shells of crustaceans (e.g. shrimps, prawns) kitinthey win from. There is also a process to extract it from chitin in mushrooms, but this is a more expensive process. In recent years, it has become increasingly popular in horticulture and agriculture because is effective not only in strengthening plants but also in preventing diseases.

How does chitosan work?

• Natural immune activator: Chitosan stimulates the plant's own defence system, increasing resistance to pathogens. This is achieved by spraying it on the leaves, where the plant's receptor senses that it is some kind of strange chitinous substance. If it is chitin, it is a fungus or insect, and therefore an enemy. So it triggers dormant genes that were previously inactive. Our plant goes on the defensive.
• Antifungal action: Many pathogenic fungi (e.g. Botrytis, Fusarium). Stimulates plants to produce chitin-degrading enzymes, i.e. to dissolve the skeleton of insects and fungi.
• Wound healing property: It helps damaged parts of the plant to regenerate faster. Heals wounds. It is also used in human wound care as it is natural and degradable in 100%.
• Leaf and root reinforcement: It improves the cell wall structure, making the plant more resistant to external stress.
