What are organic certificates and why are they important?

Official qualifications recognised in Hungary

When an input material (such as a soil improver or plant conditioner) is awarded organic certification, this means that its use is permitted in organic farming. The authenticity of this is confirmed by the seals of the following, most well-known domestic and international certification bodies.

• Biokontroll Hungária Non-profit Ltd.: Hungary’s best-known organic certification body. If a product appears on Biokontroll’s list of approved inputs, it is regarded as „gospel” by domestic organic farmers and hobby gardeners in that it can definitely be used in organic farming.

• Bio Garancia Ltd.: The other official Hungarian certification body, which carries out inspections and certification in accordance with European Union (EU) organic regulations, based on a strict set of requirements. Certified products can be found on the organisation’s list of authorised inputs.

• NÉBIH’s ‘Öko’ list: The National Food Chain Safety Office officially registers products that may be used in organic farming.

• FiBL (international level): The certification is carried out by the world’s leading research institute for organic farming (Forschungsinstitut für biologischen Landbau). If a product appears on FiBL’s European list, it serves as a premium international gateway to the organic market.

• Ecocert (international standard): An independent French certification body which conducts on-site audits of factories and production facilities and issues legally valid certificates confirming that the product and the manufacturing technology comply with organic standards. It has now grown into a vast international network.
